Musgrave ready to enter exclusive club

Cross-country skiing stalwart Andrew Musgrave will gain entry into an exclusive club of British Winter Olympians when he competes at Milano Cortina 2026.

The 35-year-old has been selected for his fifth Olympics for Team GB in Italy, having made his debut all the way back as a junior at Vancouver 2010.

In the years since, the skier from Oyne has rallied to five World Cup podiums and came within touching distance of a world medal at the 2017 World Championships.

His best finish at an Olympic Games dates back to seventh at PyeongChang 2018, but the affectionately known 'Muzzy' is ready for something new in Italy.

Musgrave is set to lead a changing of the guard at Milano Cortina 2026, with new blood coming up through the ranks.

It sees the likes of Joe Davies and Anna Pryce make their Olympic debuts, Britain's first cross-country Olympians to be born in the 21st century.

It's a crucial step for Musgrave, who only smiles at the idea of a possible sixth Games in the future, now spurred on by the younger generation chasing him down.

"It's good for me to have people that are pushing me and then good for the team in general," he said. "It means that I have to race fast so that I don't get beaten by Joe now.

"We've had a few younger males coming through but we definitely needed some women role models at the top level and Anna has been great.

"She should do well at the Olympics and I think that will do really well for the sport back in the UK, showcasing to younger people that they can do it and maybe go to the Olympics themselves."

Milano Cortina 2026 will mark the first Olympics in a European time zone since Turin 2006.

But back on home continent turf, this means that the terrain is ingrained in Musgrave's mind, and the altitude is as low as it can go, which brings a wealth of confidence for the skier.

"This is the first time that I will be racing an Olympics on tracks that I know," he said. "We know the venue really well and I like it.

"The last few Games have been at altitude and I am not the greatest athlete at altitude but now we're lower and the courses suit me, this Games will suit me. I am fairly confident."

After five Games, Musgrave is used to the usual Olympics fanfare and is now ready to get out there and return to the top form he saw during his off-season.

However, his excitement peaks when talking about the support he will receive on the ground.

With a fifth Games that is less than a three hour flight away, the Scot animatedly revealed that the crowds at Val di Fiemme will be bolstered by his family and friends ready to cheer him on with a drink in hand.

"It's going to be awesome," he said. "My mates from Scotland that I went to school with and have never been to see a ski race before are coming over to watch the 50km.

"My girlfriend is taking a group of 10 people down to watch and then my family are coming over.

"So, there is going to be so much support out on track, and I've never had that at a Games before. My family have come previously but I've never had a big group so I'm very excited about it.

"The lads don't have a clue what is going on. All they know is that they will watch me do a 50km but they don't know what that entails.

"As long as they have beer they will be happy."
