Baker pleased with ‘better’ British synchro team performance

Yvette Baker felt Great Britain’s synchronised swimming team performed better in the free final than they did in qualifying despite dropping a place to 12th at the World Championships.

Despite being just 21, Baker is among the more experienced members of the young British team having featured at the London 2012 Olympics alongside Vicki Lucass, Katie Clark and Asha Randall.

Having reached the final with an impressive display in the preliminaries earlier in the week, Britain scored 82.510 for 11th,  they posted 82.570 in the medal showdown to fall one place to 12th.

However Baker was pleased with the overall performance of the team as they continue building towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

“I think the performance went really well, we worked on a lot of things since the prelims to get everything clean, especially the figures, as we know that’s one of the areas that we’re stronger in than other teams,” she said.

“We’ve been working on height synchronisation and making sure the patterns are all there. It felt like a lot better swim than the prelims.”

As one of the elder stateswomen in the team Baker admits her role in the squad has changed and she will continue to ensure the younger members remain upbeat despite their 12th-place finish.

“My role is checking they’re OK and just going round, giving them high fives and getting them psyched up for the swims,” she added.

“We just say it’s like training, we’ve worked on everything and they know that they can do it.”
